I loovveee donuts! (duuh) But I’ve never deep fried anything, and honestly I don’t know how. So instead, to satisfy my donut cravings, I BAKE these incredible donut cupcakes. They look cupcakes, but TASTE like donuts, same texture and everything.
Now that I have a cake pop machine I thought it was a perfect opportunity to be creative with this donut recipe and make “Donut Holes”. They are little bite size pieces of donuts, and no one will ever believe they aren’t deep fried.
This is such a simple recipe with just a handful of ingredients …
Remember to leave the butter and milk out for a little while before starting to let them come to room temperature.
It’s very important to be precise with measurements when it comes to this recipe, the texture absolutely relies on it. But if you find that the batter isn’t quite right, don’t go throwing it away because the taste will still be perfect.
Alright, let’s get to the fun part!
If you are doing cupcakes, don’t forget to preheat the oven to 190 degrees Celsius and prep your cupcake tin with cupcake papers or butter before starting.
That’s it for the batter … how easy!
For cake pops: Prepare the topping (I explain this below) before spooning the mixture into your cake pop machine and bake or 4-5 minutes.
For cupcakes: Spoon the mixture into your prepared cupcake tin and bake for 15-20 minutes. Prepare the topping while the cupcakes are baking.
The tops will be a beautiful golden brown colour, and almost crust like, when done.
For the topping …
Once I had the batter and the topping prepared I set myself a cute little production line; batter, cake pop machine, butter, cinnamon sugar, container lined with paper towel.
We want to coat the hot cupcakes in the melted butter then roll them in the cinnamon sugar to finish off the amazing donut experience. The butter acts as a glue so you don’t need much, just a quick roll around.
That’s it! Little balls of heaven … yuuummm!
They are delicious when warm, so if you aren’t serving them fresh, zap them in the microwave for 20 second before serving/eating.
